About Dr Kelechukwu Njoku

An environmental economist and finance leader working at the intersection of ESG, sustainable banking, risk, financial inclusion, research and responsible growth.

Dr Kelechukwu Njoku is an environmental economist and ESG and sustainable finance advisor whose work spans banking leadership, environmental and social risk, credit, financial inclusion, digital distribution, non-interest finance, applied research and public speaking.

Professional thesis

Responsible finance works when economics, risk, governance, customer access and commercial execution are treated as one operating system.

Market perspective

Africa-focused expertise with relevance to banks, DFIs, fintechs, corporations, consulting firms, development organisations and international institutions.

From credit decisions to regional growth

His career began in commercial relationship management and progressed through credit risk, environmental and social risk, branch leadership, agency banking, direct and digital distribution, financial inclusion and regional business leadership.

That progression matters. It provides first-hand understanding of how strategy is interpreted by relationship teams, how risk is evaluated, how operations affect the customer, how distribution performs in the field and how regional growth is governed.

ESG and sustainable-banking foundation

As Environmental and Social Risk Manager at Ecobank Nigeria, he led E&S risk integration across transaction screening, categorisation, due diligence, action planning, monitoring, training and sustainable-banking implementation. The portfolio under oversight exceeded USD 2 billion in project-finance and corporate-lending exposure.

Financial inclusion and commercial execution

Subsequent leadership roles covered branch banking, a five-state agency network, regional direct and agency banking, an eleven-state financial-inclusion remit and non-interest banking market expansion. Documented results include profitability, liability growth, customer acquisition, transaction scale and active-agent development.

Environmental economics and research

Dr Njoku holds a PhD in Environmental Economics. His doctoral research focuses on energy availability, energy choices, SME business continuity, market performance and environmental sustainability. This research strengthens his work on climate finance, green MSME finance, energy resilience and evidence-led institutional strategy.
